On a beautiful May weekend recently, Dougal, our super sporty grey camper took a drive up to the magnificent Chatsworth estate for the much anticipated Chatsworth Horse Trials. The annual event, postponed for the last two years, is a must in any horse lovers diary.

It is not only set in some of the most stunning scenery that Derbyshire has to offer, but it is a highlight in the Derbyshire sporting and country-lovers diary. Not only do spectators get to witness the thrilling cross-country event, which takes the brave equine competitors over heart stopping, beautifully crafted natural jumps dotted around the estate. But they also have the opportunity to browse amongst the many equine and country themed stalls, sample some delicous food from Derbyshire and around the world from the many food stands, plus watch some of the varied horse and animal themed competitions and displays.

We were lucky enough to park right next to the river which meanders through the estate and past the house. After a busy morning, enjoying the walk through the dappled spectator walkways between the fences, and witnessing some amazing feats of horsemanship and equine agility beyond our imagination, we were grateful to return to Dougal for a lovely re-charge by the flowing, cool waters.

With a baby and shaggy dog in tow, the ease and functionality , not to mention fun of pulling open the awning, setting up our table and chairs, and enjoying our picnic in the shade of our own mini-house on wheels was very much appreciated.

Sitting by the water jump, a favourite of the spectators due to the possibility of 'a dunking'.
